There's no greeting voice when your call goes to message—only a short period of static. Or is it whirring? Either way, it might not be the device causing the sound.

[So Sam had been wrong about that much. Rinzler hadn’t sought out Clu of his own accord, not yet. Alan breathes a sigh of relief.]

Okay, good. If he calls on you, do you have a way to keep your disks safe?

[Alan doesn’t bother asking if Rinzler could simply resist the call. He’s seen Rinzler’s code and he knows the answer.]
alan_1: (really?)

[personal profile] alan_1 2016-07-04 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Unknown as in you don’t know of any way, or unknown as in you know a way but don’t know if it will work?
alan_1: (seriously dude?)

[Alan sighs and leans back from his laptop. Getting frustrated isn’t going to help anything, so he takes a moment to refocus. There are two reasons Rinzler could be answering this way: one, he honestly doesn’t know what to do. Two, he’s hiding something. Alan would have trouble telling on a good day, but it’s even more difficult over text.]

Can we speak in-person?
alan_1: (why are you like this)

[personal profile] alan_1 2016-07-05 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[Rinzler’s answer comes as more of a shock than Alan would like to admit. A clear, unequivocal refusal at the first prompt given. If the circumstances were different, Alan might have been proud of the program.]

Is there a reason why not?
alan_1: (concerned dadface2)

[personal profile] alan_1 2016-07-05 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Rinzler, I just want to know that you have a way to keep yourself safe around him. I don’t want to see you reset.

You don’t want that either, do you?
[Alan thinks he knows the answer. He wishes he could be sure of it.]
alan_1: (really?)

[personal profile] alan_1 2016-07-06 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Then what are you going to do to keep that from happening?

I can help if you need me to.
alan_1: (why are you like this)

[personal profile] alan_1 2016-07-06 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
So you’re just going to let it happen?

[Alan stops himself there. He can feel himself getting angry with the program and he knows it’s not fair. Rinzler had said it himself: it’s his function to serve Clu. And Alan’s asking him to go against that. It's not an easy request -- it may not even be possible. He tries again.]

Are you able to resist him recoding you at all?
alan_1: (tf you say about me)

[personal profile] alan_1 2016-07-06 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
[No. Whether or not Alan was involved before, he isn't just going to stand by and let Rinzler be recoded.]

If you aren’t going to do anything to stop him, then someone has to.

[personal profile] alan_1 2016-07-08 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you have someone else in mind? [He’s asking in earnest. If Rinzler knows of any other crewmembers who could potentially help him, then Alan’s not about to turn away suggestions.]
alan_1: (seriously dude?)

1/5?

[personal profile] alan_1 2016-07-10 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Rinzler. You can’t just ignore this until it’s too late. He will call on you and you need a way to protect your code when that happens.
alan_1: (why are you like this)

2/5; a few minutes later

[personal profile] alan_1 2016-07-10 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
If you want me to stay away, fine. Just let me know that you have some way to keep yourself safe.
alan_1: (why are you like this)

3/5; even more minutes later

[personal profile] alan_1 2016-07-10 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
There are people on the ship who have risked their lives for you before. Have you spoken with any of them about Clu yet? They can help you.
alan_1: (concerned dadface2)

4/5; about half an hour after the previous message

[personal profile] alan_1 2016-07-10 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
You’re really not going to say anything, are you?
alan_1: (eyes down)

5/5; a few minutes after that one

[personal profile] alan_1 2016-07-10 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[...Fine. As much as it pains Alan not to know if the program even has an idea of what to do when Clu calls for him, he can’t force Rinzler to respond. He can only hope the program has someone or something to fall back on when that time comes.

He leaves one last message, in case Rinzler changes his mind.]
